TOP OF THE POPS

REVIEW BY KEEFY
***************
Top of the pops is a pop management
game, that allows for as many as up to
eight players to play at once. As you
would imagine, the game is a totally
textual jobbie. Most of the options
are selectable with the mouse.
Each player starts off with 150,000
quid which is quite a hefty sum for
any new buisness by any standards. The
aim?. To get to number one!. Each
week you are asked if you want to
release a record, then you type in the
name of the group and the record title
along with how much dosh you want to
shell out on it's release. Every week
you're given a financial report and
chart update so you can keep an eye on
how your latest releases are doing.
Unfortunately, that's just about it
i'm afraid. The options that come
actually included in the game are
pretty good though.
Theres a help
option, which gives you all the
relevant info about the game, it can
be read on screen or printed out. You
can change the screen colours, set the
date and time, delete files, check
your disks for space, look at the disk
directory, and there are several
printer options, it even has the
facilty to create your own printer
driver.
The trouble is, a few fancy
options do not a good game make. The
game itself gets deadly boring after a
short time. I found that all i had to
do was release a couple of records and
spend loads of cash on them and a few
weeks later i'd be number one.
Because of the lack of things to
actually do involving the game. The
repetitiveness of it soon has you
reaching for another game to play.
I reckon that the programmer of the
game is probably capable of much
better, and i think that if he'd spent
more time on the gameplay and less on
the un-nessecary addons it probably
would be better. The program has a
shareware fee of a fiver on it, and
half of this goes to charity. If you
like giving to charity then it's worth
registering, otherwise the only
satisfaction you will get is from
watching your opponents records
nosedive after only one week in the
charts.
Sorry Robin, but i can only give
it 3 out of 10. The program is a bit
old though so with a bit of luck it
might have since been updated.
